Tuff Tuffy
9/2/00 Hello. I'm Thom's Dad. Several years ago, Thom's Mom was putting food out for a mother cat
and her four kittens. We decided to trap them and get them all neutered. I rented a trap
and set it. The kittens walked in and out of it without tripping it. So I tied a piece of
thread to the tripper and hid behind a bush. I managed to catch three kittens, one at a
time, and put them in the cellar. The first two cried pitifully when they were caught. The
third one did not cry. He was busy examining the trap and he appeared to be trying to
understand it. I decided he was pretty tough and named him Tuffy.
Tuffy put up quite a fight when Thom's sister and Mom tried to get him into the cat
carrier to take him to the Vet for neutering. They were exhausted and were about to give
up when Tuffy surrendered. He has been a fine pet except for a tendency to spritz on
furniture and walls. He is reasonably good in the kitchen, living room, and dining room -
the rooms in the center of the house. But the outer rooms and the upstairs are off limits
to him. We have plywood and cardboard protecting the stuff at floor level in the cellar.
When he was still a kitten, Tuffy would stand on his hind legs and put his front
paws on the TV to watch animals. I don't recall any other cat doing this, and Tuffy stopped
doing it when he matured. He used to look up at me so I could drop a rubber band on his
nose. Then he would let it slide off and bat it around. The only playing he does now is
boxing with his pal, Maggie, a black-and-white female cat.
He enjoys human company and likes to have his belly rubbed. He also tries to get
other cats to lick his head. He tries to act like the alpha male with varying results,
depending on which cat he's dealing with. He is only able to bully one cat, an older male.
The others don't take any guff from Tuffy.
One of the things that you learn from living with cats is that they are unique
individuals, each with his own personality. There are lots of other things you learn from
cats. Maybe we better not go into that.
