I find sprinkling johnsons baby powder lightly over the litter makes a real
difference and keeps it fresh longer and causes no harm to your kitty.

My soon to be born Devon Rex's breeder suggests sprinkling vanilla extract lightly on the litter.

First off, the baking soda works like a charm, just make sure you mix it
really well with the litter. Another little trick I do, is to add a
perfumed powder in there. Just go to a pharmacy and in the womens/makeup
area there should be some sort of inexpensive scented body powder. Pick a
scent and voila! It not only works really well, but the kitties smell nice
too!

A great, but expensive cat litter is called Everclean at Petsmart. Runs about 15.00
but lasts 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the number of cats. A good way to clean cat mess
is get vinegar and baking soda. Sprinkle the vinegar over the mess-
(neutralizes the order) then sprinkle to baking soda, dry and vacuum

One way to reduce litter smell is too invest in a cat loo with a vent at the top.
Put a sheet of anti odour carbon filter, which is very cheap and available in home-ware
stores, in the top and no more smell.
Also having a lid on the top gives your cat a little privacy.

the question was ask about stinking litter box remidies. here is my
recamendation get a 'litter maid' self cleaning litter box!!!!!

to the person with litter box problems, try dirt or sand in the box for a while.
If this works after the cat is using the box each time,
gradually add more litter each change till all litter. Good Luck

odor from litter box? switch to clumping and clean it at least twice a
day and spray with Nature's Answer to finish up. My cats used to go
next door and poop on the patio tiles rather than use the litter box
until I made the above changes. Now they are content and I am happier
too... still cleaning up the carpets on a regular basis from cat
puke...I think I will try the catnip suggestion.

I have a female cat that used to do this. If the litter box is in the bathroom or
somewhere where it can get moist (from shower steam, etc.) this can cause this problem.
Also, sometimes if the boxes are not very, very clean then they may find another place.
It is not normally to be bad, but is generally because they do not like the litter box
for that. When I moved the litterbox out of the bathroom and started cleaning it more regularly
(not that it was bad, but she like it better now) the problem stopped.

to the person who is having trouble with their male neutered persian using the
litterbox, I first suggest taking the cat to the vet to see if there is a problem
with its bowels. It could also be a problem with the cat not wanting to go in a
dirty box - try scooping more often or adding one or two more boxes (some cats
don't like to do both in the same box). Try also switching back to his regular
litter, he might not like the new stuff. Hope this helps!
and to reduce the smell of litter, try feeding your cat a premium food (less junk in =
less junk out) without any by-products and a meat (chicken/chicken meal, or soemthing
similar - NO by-products!) as the first ingredient. baking soda is good too, or scoop
more often (once a day at least), or you could try pine litter, which actually has that
lovely smell of pine. good luck!

There's a WONDERFUL product called 'Ammo Cat' which is some kind of a natural
mineral - comes in a carton - like a 2 litre milk carton, that you sprinkle into
the litter - not a lot - it works miracles! With 2 cats, I clean the box just
once a week, with absolutely no odor!
8/02
To the person who wants to know how to decrease litterbox odor: Try Nature's Miracle.
They make a powdered enzyme additive that works great. It doesn't eliminate 100% of
the odor, but it does decrease it significantly.
I have 5 cats and I've tried everything...this is the best.

I would like to contribute a great litter box odor control. Mix in Borax.
You can find it in the laundry section. The directions are on the side of the
box. I think it's 1 part Borax to 6 parts litter. any brand of litter will do,
even the cheap stuff. This works like nothing I have seen or smelled.

try putting his litter box in the location where he actually goes. If he uses it, gradually move it back to where you want it.
He may not want to go where the other cat goes, he may want his own potty-space.
He may be going where he is to 'mark' his area,
Try another type of litter, he may not like it. He may also want more or less litter in the box. I have a cat who is finicky about this.
He may not like the box itself, especially if it's covered.
There's some spray stuff available at the pet stores that attracts them to potty where it's sprayed. I know this is available for dogs, not sure about cats.
I've had a lot of cats, my opinion is that if you can reasonably accommodate their preferences, they'll usually use the box.
7/02
I have an 11 yr old, spayed, female Tortise-Shell. I too use Tidy Cat, helps
with the smell. The problem I have is that as soon as I clean her box, she
practically breaks her back to make it dirty again. It doesn't matter if
she just went. I'm afraid to clean it too many times, she might hurt herself.
And cats DO have shovels. After she's done and she starts her covering-it-up
thing, she'll get on the outside of the box and continues to dig getting alot
of litter on the rug we put under her box. When it gets too bad, we shake the rug over
the box so that's one less mess to sweep up.
6/02
Cat boxes can be renewed at every change including old steeped-in smells
and scratch mark buildup by soaking kittybox in white vinegar, then
rinsing. It will make the oldest, raunchiest cat boxes like new again.
6/02
By the way, for our three house kitties, our favorite litter is Yesterdays News.
It was recommended by the vet who performed life-saving urinary tract surgery on
one of our male cats, and we really love it. Clumping litter doesn't work for us.
5/02
Feline Pine, a litter made from compressed sawdust, is the most effective
odor controling litter I have found. Amazingly absorbant, I now use less and
spend less for two cats than I did for one in a typical sand litter. A close
second place is yesterday's
news made from recycled news paper. Environmentaly and nose friendly.

Dear Tidy Cat,
I have been faced with the same dilemma. The only semi-solution I've
found, which doesn't really solve the problem, but it helps a little, is
to put a little rug underneath the litter box that extends a ways out
from under the box. Most of the mess (litter and otherwise) gets snagged
in the fibers of the rug and so it doesn't spread around the rest of the
house as much. Of course, there's still the issue of the little rug
being a mess most of the time. This issue falls into the 'If they can
find a cure for all those diseases, why can't they fix a simple problem
like this?'Good luck in your pursuit of the perfect Poo Poo Platter!

I've been using Tidy Cat, Multiple Cat Formula. I like the way it clumps and controls odor. But I haven't figured out how to keep the spread of litter from getting everywhere. I think the cats have little shovels and probably could compete in the cat olympics for distance throwing. What kind of litter do you all use and how do you keep it from being spread around the house?
Whenever I come home, the first expectation they have after they greet me is to clean their boxes so they can go again. Does that happen to you all out there? Kind of makes you feel important as you scoop their fresh poop, with the chill of the morning causing steam to rise from their cargo. You place it into the trash but the feel of the mass reminds you you're alive.
