Some short stories:

2/04 - Who wouldn't want a scorpion for a gift?
When I was about eight years old a wonderful Maine Coon adopted us and was rechristened Nine Lives. Niner lived a very long time, some of it in the San Diego countryside. She loved to hunt and would leave us gifts all over the place. One night I threw back my covers to find the bottom of a scorpion waiting for me. Frequently there would be mice waiting for us at the door and once even an opossum that was bigger than she was. The most troubling was when she would deposit parts of rabbits in the washer or dryer (at least they were clean if they hit the washer first!). What a good provider!

Alaskan gift giving
When I lived in Alaska, my calico, Mukluk (ethnically named for her four white boots), used to bring home mice and birds on a regular basis. One day she brought us a mink, and though she wouldn't say, we presumed it to be less than tasty, as it was whole when she left it for us. Her prey got larger....I should preface it to say that there was an elevated cat door (she had to jump 2.5 ft. to access it) on the side of the garage. She, at only 8 lbs., got a rabbit into the garage, through the cat door, on two occassions. They were at least as big as she was. When we moved to California, gophers and moles seemed to be what was available. That was until the week that a huge crow stalked, chased, and swooped to peck at her, if she ventured out from under the bushs. On the fourth morning there were only crow remains. Beware all of you varmits in animal heaven. She was with us for 18 years, and such a love....
